Windows Desptop Tips

A CLEAN AND EMPTY DESK TO START

Win95 starts up with your desktop the way you left it--the same folders open. It also automatically starts any programs in the StartUp folder. To start with all folders closed and no programs running, press SHIFT when the Windows startup sound sings out.

(Editorial Note: Pressing SHIFT from a restart will automatically reboot into SAFE mode.)

USE ASTERISK TO FULLY EXPAND FOLDER

Want to fully expand a folder in the left pane of a two-paned Explorer window? Select the folder and press the asterisk key (*) on your numeric keypad. The result is a fully expanded view of all folders and subfolders inside.

GRAB IMAGES RIGHT OFF THE COMPUTER SCREEN

Did you know that you can easily grab an image right off your screen and pop it into PowerPoint? It couldn't be simpler! Set up your screen so the information you want to grab is displayed as large as possible. Press PrintScrn or Shift-PrintScrn to capture the full screen to the Clipboard, or press Alt-PrintScrn to capture just the active window to the Clipboard.

Switch to PowerPoint and choose Edit, Paste or press Ctrl-V to paste the image from the Clipboard into your presentation. This is a great way to include things like static pictures of Web pages, program screens and dialog boxes, or information that won't normally copy and paste in your PowerPoint presentations.

(Editorial Note: You can use the paste technique to put these images into any bitmapped graphics tool, such as Paint, also... Not just PowerPoint!)
