Help for Sluggish Windows

If you’re running Windows 98 on a slow computer -- say, on a processor slower than a Pentium 150 or with less than 32MB of RAM -- you may find that your programs run unacceptably slow. Following are a few things you can do with your Display settings (click the Start button; choose Settings, Control Panel; and then double-click the Display icon) to speed things up a bit:

* Disable multimedia display schemes on the Appearance tab.
* Turn off the Active Desktop on the Web tab.
* On the Effects tab, disable the “Animate windows, menus, and lists” and “Show window contents while dragging” options.
